Too many people are eating too much sugar, often despite knowing better.

The thing about sugar is, the more we have of it, the more we want.

Our body physically and biochemically changes to crave more of the sweet stuff. Additionally, the more sugar we eat, the more insulin the body has to produce, which in excess, instructs the body to store fat and avoid burning it.

Yet, in many developed countries, people consume an average of 37 teaspoons of sugar a day (NZ statistics, 2021)—that’s an additional 124g of sugar per day, or 45kg of sugar per year for our body’s load!

Just how much sugar is in our food?

A chocolate bar with 24g of sugar is equal to 5 teaspoons of sugar.

A 250ml can of energy drink with 27g of sugar is equal to 5.5 teaspoons of sugar.

A vanilla ice cream cone with 18g of sugar is equal to 3.5 teaspoons of sugar.

A 600ml bottle of soft drink with 64g of sugar is equal to 13 teaspoons of sugar.

A slice of chocolate cake with 25g of sugar is equal to 5 teaspoons of sugar.

A 500ml bottle of orange juice with 40g of sugar is equal to 8 teaspoons of sugar.

1. Shake off

Once you’ve enrolled in the course, you’ll receive an email from us with all of the details you need to login and access the online material. Each of your daily emails from Dr Libby will also direct you back to the site and to the course material for that day.

To ensure you have flexibility and freedom in choosing when you engage, this course is completely online so you can take it at your own pace over the 42 days. Once the course begins, you’ll receive an email from Dr Libby each day throughout the program to help keep you inspired to continue your journey to greater health and vitality. Most days your email will contain a link to a video which contains the course content for that day. You can also login to the course platform and connect with other participants along with the Dr Libby team via the forum.

Most of the videos are around 7 minutes, though some are longer, and some are a little shorter. Remember you can take the course at your own pace over the 42 days – it’s designed to be flexible. However, if you want to keep pace with the daily content, we estimate between 10-30 minutes a day.

The course is suitable for people taking medications, however, if you are concerned, we recommend speaking with  your health practitioner before enrolling. 

Absolutely! In this course, Dr Libby will guide you to effectively reduce your sugar intake. While there is guidance around foods and beverages to avoid/minimise during this process, there are no set meal plans.

This course is suitable whilst pregnant or breastfeeding (it simply educates you about sugar and encourages you to make dietary changes that support this), although if you have concerns or health conditions, please consult with your qualified healthcare professional before enrolling in this course, to ensure it is suitable for you and/or your baby. 

If you have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and are working with a specialist or other healthcare practitioner, we recommend consulting with them before enrolling in this course.  If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and are using insulin, please do the same. 

If you have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but you are not on insulin, or if you are “pre-diabetic” or have impaired glucose tolerance, the course is suitable for you. The course simply educates you about sugar and encourages you to make dietary changes that support this.
